#278 Oso Assembly No. 278, Order of the Rainbow for Girls, is sponsored by Oso Chapter No. 868 Order of the Eastern Star. Oso Assembly was instituted on October 1, 1956 and constituted December 16, 1957, with a membership of 25 girls and Miss Carry Van Vleck as the first Worthy Advisor. Mrs. Beatrice Harris, the first Mother Advisor of the Assembly, served until 1958. By the time the Assembly had celebrated 25 years of service, the Assembly had initiated 474 girls, its Rainbow Girls and adults had served 17 different offices in the Grand Assembly of Texas, and 99 members and sponsors had received the Grand Cross of Color degree for their devotion and service to Oso Assembly.

Some of the Charity projects participated in by Oso Assembly included helping sick or underprivileged children, visiting the elderly in nursing homes, delivering tickets and ushering for the Shrine Circus, stuffing animals for the Scottish Rite Hospital, and participating in church activities and the annual Easter Sunrise Service. Fund raising activities included candy sales, rummage sales, and an annual steak dinner. Like present day Rainbow girls, these Rainbow sisters had parties, gatherings, visited other assemblies and traveled together to Grand Assembly. Oso Assembly No. 278 ceased meeting after many years, but their Charter was re-issued on April 27, 1997, by Mrs. Pead Mills, Supreme Deputy in Texas, followed by an initiation ceremony for 19 girls on that same day. Miss Erin McGinnis was installed as the first Worthy Advisor of the newly re-instituted Assembly, and Mrs. Kathy Bubela was installed as Mother Advisor.

To date, 8 members and sponsors have received the Grand Cross of Color degree. Today's Rainbow Girls continue to serve their community with devoted attendance and service. In addition to other Charity projects, they have collected and donated toys and books to a day care center and to the Halo Flight (which transports very ill or injured children to the hospital), helped with the Shiner's Easter Party for Special Children, presented the flag and/or served as escorts to Grand Officers at several Eastern Star and Masonic installations, assisted in several installation ceremonies of Huisache Assembly, San Antonio, Texas, attended 3 Grand Assemblies and 2 schools of Instruction, served meals at several Eastern Star, Daughters of the Nile and Shiners' banquets and held Friendship Meetings to acquaint prospective members to Rainbow.

Fund raisers have included several garage sales, a baked potato luncheon, a taco salad luncheon, sausage on a stick sales at the Kleberg Air Show, Entertainment book sales and calendar sales. Like their earlier sisters, Oso Rainbow Girls like to have fun. Among other things, they have had Christmas parties, cookout and swim parties, a trip to Chuck-E- Cheese and slumber parties with their Huisache Assembly sisters. We are so proud to watch and help the girlhood of our Nation grow and mature through their participation in the beautiful Order of the Rainbow for Girls.
